Empowering Women to Build, Scale and Lead Screen-Based Businesses
Female Founders, sponsored by British Business Bank, is a six‑month growth programme designed to support and accelerate ambitious, female‑led screen businesses.
As women continue to reshape the business landscape, this programme exists to ensure that talent, vision and leadership are matched with the skills, confidence and support needed to scale successfully.
Through an intensive series of expert‑led workshops, one‑to‑one business coaching and peer connection, Female Founders equips entrepreneurs with the tools to build sustainable, profitable companies.
The programme addresses both the strategic and personal barriers to growth, recognising the challenges that can be unique to female founders and turning them into opportunities for long‑term success.

I can honestly say my confidence has sored since joining Female Founders. I must admit that I felt like a minnow in a big pond. Yet when I got to know the group, that wasn't the case. I was equal to everyone else and having a mentor alongside me has made the world of difference.
It had HUGE value. From simply having an accountability between each session so things continued to move along, to being able to discuss everything openly and honestly, good or bad. What is Female Founders?
With the growing rise of female-led companies, women in business are making significant strides toward greater equity. With less than 2% of equity investment going to all female teams in 2014, this programme aims to support closure of this gap, as well as equipping female entrepreneurs with essential skills and the confidence to scale their businesses successfully.
By fostering a vibrant and diverse network of female business leaders across regions, this initiative provides a unique platform for screen-based businesses led by women to achieve extraordinary growth and realise their full potential.
What is involved?
Female Founders programme will deliver a series of 12 intense workshops as well as 121 holistic business coaching sessions with proven industry leaders over eight months where companies taking part in the programme can:

Create and complete a comprehensive plan to grow and scale their businesses

Get expert advice on business planning, funding and finance, taking their businesses to market, decision making and how to structure teams and hire the right talent

Gain a greater understanding of revenue models, profitability and IP monetisation
-
Learn directly from and build their network with proven industry leaders
- Receive one to one business coaching throughout the programme
- Be part of the annual Female Founders annual conference bringing together the 6 years of Female Founders cohorts.

Meet The Mentors
Cath Ellington
Beginning her career as a Sales Executive at TFM in Stockton, Cath progressed through the organisation to become Managing Director, building a reputation for strong commercial leadership, strategic vision and an ability to inspire teams to achieve exceptional results. In 2006, she was entrusted with launching and leading the nationwide initiative of Cash for Kids, the charitable network aligned to local radio stations across the UK. Under her leadership, the charity established itself as a powerful force for supporting disadvantaged and vulnerable children, delivering meaningful impact in communities nationwide.
Following five successful years leading the charity arm of the business, Cath returned to the core operations of Bauer Media as Managing Director North East, overseeing sales, marketing and programming operations across a portfolio of dozens of market-leading media and audio brands. She subsequently progressed to lead the commercial division across Bauer Media’s entire network, holding responsibility for driving revenue growth, commercial strategy and business performance at scale.
In 2019, after a career spanning more than three decades in media and radio, Cath established her own consultancy. Since then, she has worked intensively with dozens of businesses across the creative and screen sectors, helping founders and entrepreneurs navigate the complexities of growth that align with their personal values.
Her work spans in-depth business and commercial strategy, governance, organisational development, brand positioning, investment readiness and leadership coaching, supporting businesses at critical stages of their development as well as coaching founders and senior executives through personal and professional challenges, helping them build resilience, confidence and clarity as they lead their organisations through change. Her expertise includes holistic person-centred growth planning, governance, brand and vision development, leadership effectiveness and investment preparation.
Erica Wolfe-Murray
I see opportunities for creative businesses everywhere. Whether on screens, harnessing the power of audio, developing events or thinking of new products and services. It’s what I’ve been doing my whole life – helping creative people build imaginative, profitable, resilient ventures.
Starting my creative sector career in an international ad agency working on British Airways, London Transport and Newsweek, I moved role and industry to work as the in-house copywriter at the Conran Design Group, before being headhunted to build the B2C arm of a south London design studio. After winning clients like NatWest and Next, two years later I concurrently set up my own design businesses and an indie doc production company with a partner. The former launched its own home furnishing & garden accessory range whilst also doing project work for clients such as Historic Royal Palaces and London Zoo. Meanwhile the latter won awards for BBC and C4 work filming in difficult locations around the globe, before internationalising the business with commissions from NatGeo and A&E, with me as the FD up until 2011.
At the start of 2012, I set up Lola – an innovation studio focused on helping creative, cultural and tech sector clients to harness the potential of their existing intellectual assets and IP to generate new audiences, revenues, products and services across the spectrum, combining both creative and financial perspectives. I’ve worked on projects with Disney, NatGeo, UK Parliament, NotontheHighStreet, Marriott, Puma, Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, and 400+ ventures across the breadth of the creative industries. I led Creative Enterprise’s Female Founders Scale-up Programme for 3 years combining talk-the-talk workshops involving leading industry figures with 1-2-1 walk-the-walk hands-on business growth coaching with each of the 38 company founders. I am on the advisory board of 3 companies encompassing VR, games, scripted/unscripted, podcasts, createch and branded content, work closely with a virtual production incubator and am a trustee of the Gordon Russell Design Museum.
In 2020 my book Simple Tips, Smart Ideas: Build a Bigger Better Business was a finalist in the Business Book Awards, I have an IP for Creative Entrepreneurs course on 8 million+ creative platform Domestika and am an advisor on US investor platform Tegus.com.
Sarah Tierney
Sarah is a commercial leader with over 20 years’ experience across media and the creative industries. She has launched and scaled multiple businesses and propositions in the Television, Film, Sports and EdTech sectors. She now advises broadcasters, investors and entrepreneurs on maximising the global value of IP, fundraising and growth, and technology-enabled models of audience engagement, content distribution and monetisation.
Prior to working as a consultant, Sarah was Director of Distribution and member of the Executive Leadership Team at ITV, the UK's largest commercial broadcaster. She joined to help launch and scale ITVX, the new AVOD/SVOD streaming platform. Before that, Sarah was a serial entrepreneur, founding and scaling content and media-tech businesses. These include global film streaming platform We Are Colony, scaled into 130 markets; and independent production company, Clarity Productions, producing Specialist Factual for the BBC, Channel 4 and other broadcasters. Across her businesses, Sarah has raised venture capital from Angels, HNW and Venture Capital Funds, and with two successful company exits.
Sarah is also an experienced Non-Executive Director and Trustee.
Sarah’s expertise covers monetisation of IP, scaling up, leadership, business strategy, identification of new markets, finance and investment, legal affairs, and new business models.
Vanessa Chapman
Vanessa Chapman runs VJC Media, a creative and business agency that works internationally with IP owners, media companies, brands and investors.
An award-winning senior media executive, Vanessa has developed, produced, commissioned and acquired intellectual property across multiple platforms and supports a wide variety of clients on corporate strategy, business planning, fundraising and M&A activity.
Vanessa sits on the advisory board of several companies, working with founders and management teams on their day-to-day business as well as growth and investment planning.
With nearly 30 years’ experience in the entertainment industry, Vanessa is a frequent speaker/panellist at major industry events in the UK, Europe and the US, a juror on BAFTA panels and the Rose D’Or and acts as chair and content director at numerous Cartoon Europe conferences, including Cartoon Business and the innovative CartoonNext.
A former Controller of Children’s & Family Programmes at ITV, where she ran a £40m+ production and acquisition budget, Vanessa went on to help develop and spearhead the strategy for the LEGO Company’s entry into the global television and movie industry. She then became MD of the business.
Vanessa started her career as a national newspaper journalist, before joining BBC Radio and then London Weekend Television’s current affairs and popular factual department. She rose to be a senior programme editor before joining the ITV Network Centre in the 1990s as a programme commissioner.
Eligibility & Fees
The Female Founders programme is only available to female led screen businesses based in England working in or with narrative storytelling.
You will need to show that your business has the potential and ambition to scale up. To be considered for the programme, companies must:
- Be a female founder (or co-founder) of a screen-based narrative business working in storytelling for the moving image (this can include film/TV, games, immersive, createch)
- Be registered and trading in England (our regional remit will ensure that a minimum of 80% of the cohort will be based in the English regions outside of London)
- Have successfully created a revenue generating product, reached a market/audience of scale or launched a new platform/ tech service that has enabled storytelling through moving image.
- You must have employed a minimum of 2 people (including yourself) at some point in the last 5 years
- Have generated consistent sales revenue in the last 3 years in addition to any funding secured via grants, investment etc.
- Be committed to the long term development of your company
The fee for participation in the programme is £250 + VAT per company.
Creative Enterprise is a BFI Lottery funded programme – overall, the support including group learning sessions, coaching and personalised mentoring you receive during the Female Founders programme is valued at over £5,000 per person.
There is also a bursary (contribution towards travel and accommodation) available for in-person sessions if needed. If you feel like this fee is a significant barrier to your participation in the programme, please speak to Creative Enterprise team to discuss options.
Programme Delivery Schedule
Participants will take part in:
- 8 x half day online workshops
- 4 x in-person and networking sessions
- 8 x one-hour one-to-one mentoring sessions per company
The programme will take place between September 2026 and April 2027. In person sessions will be decided once we know where the cohort is based and will be a central location.
Subsistence contributions are available to help those who need it for travel to access in person sessions. These funds are limited and are at the discretion of Creative Enterprise.
The workshops are intended to give you an overview of the subject matter in question. You will hear from industry experts as well as other company founders in the cohort, learning from their experiences. The 1-2-1 coaching supports you to apply the right thinking and models for your business growth

Please note, these dates are subject to change and are meant just as an indicator as to what to expect on the programme. We have scheduled all sessions outside of major school holidays, and we will always start all sessions after 9am to help support those with young school age children. The later in-person session locations will be decided once we have a cohort and will be a central location.
Application Process
We want the process to feel thoughtful and two-way. Each stage helps us understand your business, and helps you decide whether the programme is the right fit.
1. Submit Your Application - Complete the online short application form. We ask the basic information about your business and what your ambitions are as a founder. We also collect data for monitoring purposes. You’ll receive a confirmation email once your application has been submitted.
2. Invitation to Founder Fit Interview - The applications are then reviewed by the Creative Enterprise team – if shortlisted, you’ll be invited to our Founder Fit Interview. We aim to get back to you within 28 calendar days.

What is Founder Fit Interview?
This is a conversation to explore whether the programme is the right fit for you and your business at this stage. It’s not a traditional interview but more of a two-way discussion to assess where you’re at as a founder and where you see your business going.
For Female Founders: Introduction to Investment, this conversation will take approximately 45 minutes with our programme manager and one or more mentors. You’ll be sent the questions and topic for discussion in advance.

3. Second Conversation - In some cases, we may invite you to a short follow-up conversation. This allows us to clarify specific areas of your application and ensure the cohort mix is right for everyone involved. We aim to have this conversation within one week of the Founder Fit Interview
4. Final Decision - All applicants will be notified of the outcome. Successful applicants will receive a formal invitation to join the cohort, programme dates and commitment expectations as well as onboarding details If you’re not selected this time, we’ll aim to provide brief feedback and may suggest alternative support where relevant.

Our Female Founders Ecosystem
Our Female Founders ecosystem is Creative Enterprise’s long-term commitment to supporting women building screen industry businesses across England.
It brings together targeted programmes, peer networks, events and industry partnerships to address the structural barriers female founders continue to face: from access to finance and leadership confidence to visibility and sustainable growth.
By creating a connected pathway of support at every stage of the entrepreneurial journey, the ecosystem exists to level the playing field, strengthen businesses, and build a more inclusive and resilient screen sector for the future.
Female Founders Programme
Creative Enterprise’s Female Founders programme champions ambitious women leading screen industry businesses across England. It’s the original programme for female leaders and has been running since 2020. Through expert-led workshops, mentorship, peer learning and structured development support, the programme equips founders with the tools, confidence and networks they need to grow sustainably. It creates space for honest conversation about the realities of building a screen business, while fostering long-term collaboration and shared learning within a powerful national community.
Over the last five years, we’ve supported over 70 female founders via this programme.

Female Founders: Introduction to Investment
Female Founders: Introduction to Investment is a new programme from Creative Enterprise designed to demystify the world of investment for women building screen businesses. Instead of traditional “investment-readiness” structure, this programme creates space to explore funding options, build understanding, and develop confidence before making significant financial decisions. Through expert guidance, and insights from both founders and investors, the programme supports participants to gain clarity on different funding routes and to consider whether external investment aligns with their long-term vision and growth ambitions.
